Sharepoint 2010 Install – Prerequisites Fail

I was installing SharePoint 2010 for the first time and under the install menu I ran Install software prerequisites which ran through without an issue.

After completing the prerequisites install I ran Install SharePoint Server and was faced with this lovely error message:

Now you would have thought running the Install software prerequisites would have actually installed all the necessary software, but no.

Here is a list of the other software and there links that you need to download and manually install before being able to continue:

Microsoft Windows Identity Foundation
Microsoft Sync Framework v1.0
Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Packs
ASP.NET and Windows Forms Chart Controls for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1

After I install those 4 missing components the install ran through without an issue.

Backing up Putty Config

Ever wanted to backup your Putty settings, either because you are changing machine or you have spent such a long time configuring the multiple custom options in Putty you don’t want to ever lose all that work. Unfortunately Putty does not have an export option so we have to go back to basics and export out the Putty registry key to save the settings. I will say now that if you are not comfortably with using regedit then I would suggest not taking the risk and leaving it well alone, one wrong change can kill your OS on the next boot.

If you are happy navigating the registry then you can backup putty by:

My job role has changed so much over the last 6 months I have managed to move back into the windows environment looking after multiple hyper-v clusters and SAN’s. Because of this I am starting to write articles in scvmm.co.uk or ddccentral.co.uk (Same site)

I am going to keep this site running and will post to it from time to time but I am now going to concentrate on Microsoft System Centre and there DDC toolkit with hyper-V

P.S.

I still personal run multiple debian boxes (without plesk) so I will still be around Linux I have not completely moved over to the dark side.

Happy Days.

In all versions of Windows up to and including Windows 7 you will recieve “The specified device name is invalid.” when you try and create a folder called con. con along with the words listed below are described as reserved words.

In MS-DOS, several special “device files” were available to aid in performing certain tasks, such as clearing the screen or deleting extraneous output from a program. In order to maintain backwards-compatibility, these were also included in every version of windows to date.

You have to laugh, there are some strict rules on who can purchase a .ie domain. Try and buy an Irish domain (.ie) from register365.com, once you have searched for the domain name that you want to purchase click on “Restriction Information” next to the .ie you get the follow (can you see the mistake):

.ie, blog, domain, Irish, register365

Firefox – plugin-container.exe

After moving from Fedora 12 back to Windows 7 I have been spending a little time in Process Explorer to see what could be switched off to free up some additional resources.

I noticed plugin-container.exe running, after doing a little digging I found out that it first shipped in Firefox 3.6.4 for Windows and Linux only, running Adobe Flash, Apple QuickTime and Microsoft Silverlight in a separate process called plugin-container. The web browser loads these certain plugins in a separate process (plugin-container.exe) to provide you uninterrupted browsing even when certain plugins stops working.
