I was installing SharePoint 2010 for the first time and under the install menu I ran <hl_txt>Install software prerequisites</hl_txt> which ran through without an issue.

After completing the prerequisites install I ran <hl_txt>Install SharePoint Server</hl_txt> and was faced with this lovely error message:

Now you would have thought running the <hl_txt>Install software prerequisites</hl_txt> would have actually installed all the necessary software, but no.

Ever wanted to backup your Putty settings, either because you are changing machine or you have spent such a long time configuring the multiple custom options in Putty you don’t want to ever lose all that work. Unfortunately Putty does not have an export option so we have to go back to basics and export out the Putty registry key to save the settings. I will say now that if you are not comfortably with using regedit then I would suggest not taking the risk and leaving it well alone, one wrong change can kill your OS on the next boot.

If you are happy navigating the registry then you can backup putty by:

Launching <hl_txt>regedit</hl_txt> via the run box:

Or through the search box (by typing regedit)

(It really depends on what version of the Windows operating system you are running.)

Once <hl_txt>regedit.exe launches you need to navigate to <hl_txt> [HKEY_CURRENT_USER]\Software\SimonTatham </hl_txt>

Once you have found the registry key you need to right click on <hl_txt>SimonTatham</hl_txt> and select export (as in the picture below)

All you need to do is save the .reg file somewhere save.

That’s it your putty settings have been backed up.

After moving from Fedora 12 back to Windows 7 I have been spending a little time in Process Explorer to see what could be switched off to free up some additional resources.

I noticed <hl_txt>plugin-container.exe</hl_txt> running, after doing a little digging I found out that it first shipped in Firefox 3.6.4 for Windows and Linux only, running Adobe Flash, Apple QuickTime and Microsoft Silverlight in a separate process called plugin-container. The web browser loads these certain plugins in a separate process (<hl_txt>plugin-container.exe</hl_txt>) to provide you uninterrupted browsing even when certain plugins stops working.

This is all well and good but the memory management with Firefox is bad enough without launching more processes and eating up more resources. If you don’t care about a plugin (Only 4 out the moment) taking out your browser then you can disable the options buy doing the following:

Open Firefox web browser.

Type about:config in the address bar and press Enter key.

A warning will appear. Ignore it and press the “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button.

In the Filter field type dom.ipc.plugins.enabled <hl_txt2>5</hl_txt2> preferences will appear.

Ignore first one in the list (<hl_txt2>dom.ipc.plugins.enabled</hl_txt2>), By default the preference dom.ipc.plugins.enabled is already set to <hl_txt>false</hl_txt>. So, no need to touch it. Toggle (double-click) each of the four remaining preferences to change the value from <hl_txt>true</hl_txt> to <hl_txt>false</hl_txt>.

These plugins are specified in a separate <hl_txt2>dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.<hl_txt>filename</hl_txt></hl_txt2> preference, by default is set to true. We can disable them by changing their value to false.

When you restart Firefox plugin-container.exe will not run.
